I just got back from having dinner with my Dad. It was my birthday in February, and his was in March.
In November, my Dad was in a motor bike accident. He was flown to hospital in a helicopter. My Dad has one leg, this was due to another accident that happened when I was about seven years old. Any how, yes, my Dad was in another accident in November.
His motor bike crushed both of his legs, splitting both of his upper leg bones in half. We were told that he might have to have both legs amputated and that he will never walk again. He had a bone infection which was spreading quickly, and into his blood stream as well. With a lot of luck, my Dad managed to save both of his legs. But since then it has been really hard for him and my family to cope with this.
For about 4 months, my sister and I were going around to his house nearly every day to help him out. As he was in a wheelchair, he could not do a lot for himself. My Dad is a really independent man, so it was really hard for him to have his two daughters help him out with every need.
I won’t go much into detail about the matter because it still breaks my heart. Seeing my Father in that state. In so much pain and not being able to fend for himself. He’s such a strong man and I’m so proud that he is my Dad. This experience has brought us so much closer. Whenever I see him, he will give me a kiss and a hug. He never use to. It’s nice to show people how much you love them whenever your with them. We never had that relationship before, and now we do.
My Dad has been out of his wheelchair for about two weeks now. He’s been doing rehab to build strength in his legs again, so the wheelchair is still around sometimes. Tonight when we went out for dinner, I saw my Dad walk up a flight of stairs and I almost cried. For the amount of pain he suffered in the past few months, he’s come on top. 2 months ago, he was to embarrassed to even leave the house because people made fun of him for being disabled and missing a limb.
Now his attitude is, fuck you world, I can beat and win everything in life.
He makes me smile, and I’m so glad to call him my Dad. I love you so much Dad, you truly are an inspiration to me.
